How Long Should a Launch Video Be on Each Platform
Product launch video length is a question where every guide gives a different number and none of them knows your audience. This guide separates platform limits from good lengths. It shows what each official help page states (read on 2026-10-22), which pages we could not read, and the starting points we would use for a SaaS release.
If you are new to the format, read the SaaS launch video guide first.
Product launch video length by platform at a glance
The middle column is a platform rule only where we opened the platform's own page today. The last column is advice, meant as a starting point you will test.
| Place | What the platform page says | Our starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Site hero | Your own page, no platform rule | Under 30 seconds, silent, looping |
| Product Hunt gallery | YouTube links only; no length rule on the page | 30 to 60 seconds |
| YouTube long form | Wider shapes such as 16:9 stay long form | 1 to 3 minutes |
| YouTube Shorts | Up to 3 minutes, square or vertical | Under 60 seconds |
| Instagram Reels | Help page did not render for us | 15 to 30 seconds |
| TikTok | Organic page did not render; paid in-feed ads that are not Spark Ads: up to 10 minutes | 15 to 30 seconds |
| X | Help pages returned an error for us | 20 to 45 seconds |
| LinkedIn company Page | 3 seconds to 10 minutes; ratio 1:2.4 to 2.4:1 | 30 to 60 seconds |
| In app | Your own product, no platform rule | 10 to 20 seconds |
| Mail clients vary; link out to a hosted video | 20 to 40 seconds |
Why one length does not fit every place
A launch video announces one release. Explainer video length often runs longer because the job is to teach the why, while a launch video only has to show one change and one next step.
Where the video plays also changes what viewers will tolerate. Someone who opens your changelog page wants the detail. Someone scrolling a feed gives you the first second or two. Write the first scene for the weaker case, and let the rest reward the viewers who stay.
You do not need ten videos. Make one master cut around the single feature, then trim it for each place, as the feature announcement video guide shows with a changelog entry.
A worked example, one master cut for five places
Say you run Acme Invoices, a small invoicing SaaS, and you just shipped recurring invoice reminders. You cut one master video of 40 seconds: a hook, the overdue invoice problem, the reminder schedule, the logged reminders and one next step. Then you trim it like this.
- Site hero, 20 seconds. Keep the hook and the schedule. Drop the proof scene. Loop it with no sound.
- In app, 15 seconds. Start at the schedule screen and end on where to switch reminders on.
- Vertical short, 30 seconds. Reframe to 9:16 and put the hook in the first two seconds.
- LinkedIn, 40 seconds. Use the master as is, with captions.
- Product Hunt gallery, 45 seconds. Add one scene for context, since the viewer chose to click play.
The rule behind it: cut a scene only when it does not help the viewer in that place, and never stretch a video to reach a number.
Site hero and in app
Your own pages have no platform limit, so the only rule is the visitor's patience. A hero video should stay under 30 seconds, silent and looping, with a clear frame to rest on if it does not autoplay.
In app, go shorter still. A release video for existing users should explain what changed and where to find it. Ten to twenty seconds is usually enough, and a way to dismiss it matters more than any extra scene.
Product Hunt gallery
Product Hunt's help center says that for videos only YouTube links are supported, recommends confirming the video is not set to private, and says you need the full URL because shortened links will not load (How to post a product, Product Hunt Help Center). Neither that page nor the launch guide states a video length limit.
Product Hunt's own launch guide also says that about 53% of products that reached Product of the Day since 2021 include a video, and that a video is not always necessary (Preparing for launch, Product Hunt). That is a count of what winners did, not proof that a video causes a better rank. Pick a length for the viewer: 30 to 60 seconds is enough to show the problem, the fix and one call to action. The full set of assets is in how to make a Product Hunt launch video.
YouTube and YouTube Shorts
YouTube Help says you can create Shorts up to three minutes long, and that a video counts as a Short when it has a square or vertical aspect ratio. Wider formats such as 16:9 are treated as long form videos (Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts, YouTube Help). The upload page gives the same two conditions: up to 3 minutes, and a square or vertical aspect ratio (Upload YouTube Shorts, YouTube Help). So the shape of the video decides which kind it is, not only the length.
That three minute allowance is a ceiling. For a single feature, a Short under a minute usually has less filler. For a long form version on your channel, one to three minutes lets you add who the feature is for and how to set it up.
Reels video size and length on Instagram
We opened three Instagram help pages on reels on 2026-10-22. Each returned only the words "Help Center", so we give no Instagram number and will not borrow one from a blog post. Check Instagram's own page on the day you export.
As advice, design Reels as vertical, full screen video with the key text away from the edges. For a single feature, 15 to 30 seconds is a good place to start. If viewers finish and want more, make a longer cut later instead of padding the first one.
SaaS TikTok marketing and X
Open with the result, show one thing, and stop. TikTok's organic upload support page rendered only its title, so we have no organic limit to quote. TikTok's Ads Manager page does state specifications for paid In-Feed Ads: videos that are not Spark Ads can run up to 10 minutes, and 9:16 is the recommended aspect ratio, with 16:9 and 1:1 also accepted (TikTok Auction In-Feed Ads, TikTok Ads Manager). Those are ad rules, not a target for a post.
X's help and ad specification pages returned an HTTP 403 error for us, so we give no X number. As a starting point, 20 to 45 seconds with captions burned in works for a single idea, because some people scroll with the sound off.
For company Page video, LinkedIn's help page lists a duration of 3 seconds to 10 minutes, an aspect ratio between 1:2.4 and 2.4:1, and a file size between 75 KB and 5 GB (Video specifications for your LinkedIn Pages and Career Pages, LinkedIn Help). That range is wide, so the real question is attention. A 30 to 60 second video that states the benefit in the first line and carries captions is a safe default for a launch announcement.
How long should a marketing video be when you ship every few weeks
If you release often, a video you must produce every few weeks cannot cost days of work each time, so shorter and narrower beats longer and polished. One feature, one problem, one next step. A founder shipping every two weeks can sustain a 20 to 40 second video far more easily than a three minute one.
Tunora (tunora.app) turns one sentence, a file or a website link into a short launch video with scenes, on-screen text and music (what Tunora is). It has no presenter, no recording, no avatar and no lip sync. Describe the feature. Get the launch video. Whatever tool you use, trim the cut for each place using the table above.
Your own retention data beats any rule
Every number in this guide, ours included, is a starting point. Platforms publish limits, not best lengths.
- Watch where viewers drop off in YouTube or social analytics and cut just before that point.
- Compare two lengths of the same feature video on the same channel before you standardize.
- Note which first line gets viewers past the opening second, and reuse it.
- Re-check platform limits every few months, because they change.
Pick one place, publish one length, read the numbers after a fixed period, and change one thing. Our SaaS launch video ideas can help you choose what to test first.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a product launch video be?
For a single SaaS release we suggest 20 to 60 seconds for most places, with shorter cuts of 15 to 30 seconds for Reels and TikTok. This is our advice, not a rule. Watch your own retention data and trim just before viewers leave. Shorter is easier to finish for one feature.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
According to YouTube Help, Shorts can be up to three minutes long, and the video must have a square or vertical aspect ratio. Wider formats such as 16:9 stay long form. That limit is a ceiling, and a Short for one feature is often better under a minute.
What video length does LinkedIn allow for company Pages?
LinkedIn's help page for Pages and Career Pages lists a duration of 3 seconds to 10 minutes and an aspect ratio from 1:2.4 to 2.4:1. For a launch announcement, a 30 to 60 second video with captions is a sensible default.
Is there a video length limit on Product Hunt?
The Product Hunt pages we read state no video length limit. They say video is added as a YouTube link only, with the full URL, and they recommend that the video is not private. Pick a length that suits the viewer, and 30 to 60 seconds is a good starting point for a single launch.
Can one video work for every platform?
Mostly, yes. Make one master cut around a single feature and trim it for each place. Square or vertical framing helps for short form channels, while wider framing suits your site and long form YouTube. Tunora turns one sentence, a file or a website link into a short launch video with scenes, on-screen text and music.
